SanDisk Data Recovery

Important files on a SanDisk card, USB flash drive or SSD that no longer works?

When SanDisk storage becomes unreadable, stops appearing or is physically damaged, the recovery approach depends on the device—not just the brand on its casing. Aesonlabs evaluates SanDisk SD and microSD cards, USB flash drives, internal SSDs and portable SSDs, with the aim of preserving the remaining data and identifying a viable recovery path.

SanDisk recovery across three types of storage

The same SanDisk name appears on devices with very different internal designs. We classify the media and its failure first, then choose the appropriate recovery workflow.

01Removable memory

SanDisk SD & microSD Data Recovery

Camera cards, smartphone microSD cards and other removable flash media that show as unreadable, ask to be formatted or stop detecting. Some devices use monolithic designs that require a different approach from conventional removable flash storage.

SanDisk USB Flash Drive Recovery

USB drives with broken connectors, missing capacity, read errors or failed controllers. Depending on the construction, analysis may involve USB electronics, controller behaviour and the underlying NAND memory.

SanDisk SSD Data Recovery

Internal SATA/NVMe and portable SSDs that no longer mount, disconnect unexpectedly or become inaccessible. Controller translation, firmware and hardware encryption can all affect recoverability.

Product-family examples identify the types of devices we can assess, not guaranteed recovery compatibility. The exact model, hardware revision, failure mode and any encryption must be checked for each case.

When the data is inaccessible

What happened to your SanDisk device?

These are common reasons customers seek professional SanDisk data recovery. Similar symptoms can have very different causes, so avoid making changes to the original device before the failure is understood.

Not detected or no longer recognized

The computer, camera or phone cannot see the card, USB drive or SSD, or the device repeatedly disconnects.

Asks to format or shows RAW

The device appears present, but its filesystem or partition information cannot be read normally.

Photos, videos or files are missing

Deleted, corrupted or inaccessible content may still be present, depending on overwrite activity, filesystem state and device behaviour.

Broken USB connector or damaged card

Physical damage to connectors, boards or flash packages may require hardware-level examination before extraction.

Capacity reports incorrectly

A drive may appear as zero bytes, the wrong size or an uninitialized device when controller or translation functions fail.

SanDisk portable SSD stopped working

Power, USB interface, firmware, controller or encryption-related issues may interrupt access to the stored data.

Beyond a software scan

Why flash-memory recovery is not one-size-fits-all

SanDisk memory cards, flash drives and SSDs do not all expose their stored data in the same way. A failed USB connector is very different from inaccessible NAND, corrupted controller metadata or an encrypted SSD that cannot initialize.

For some cases, a logical image may be sufficient. Others require specialized hardware diagnostics and, where technically feasible, flash-level acquisition and reconstruction. Encryption, wear levelling and controller-specific error correction can limit what is possible—even if NAND chips remain intact.

Our first task is to identify the architecture and failure before selecting a technique.

Protect your original data

Before you format, repair or try another scan

If the SanDisk device is failing, repeated attempts can increase risk or destroy information that may still be recoverable. Until the cause is clear:

  • Do not format or initialize a card, flash drive or SSD just because the computer asks you to.
  • Avoid CHKDSK, filesystem repair tools and repeated full scans on a device with read errors or unstable detection.
  • Do not save new files to the affected device or reuse a card after accidental deletion.
  • Do not open an SSD enclosure, desolder memory or attempt firmware tools without model-specific guidance.

If the device is physically unstable, stop powering it on and request an assessment before further attempts.

How Aesonlabs approaches the case

An evaluation based on the actual SanDisk device

We do not select a recovery method from a brand name alone. The media type, symptoms, model, physical condition and availability of backups determine what should happen next.

01

Identify the device

Confirm the SanDisk model, capacity, interface, symptoms and how the failure occurred.

02

Assess the failure

Separate logical damage from interface, controller, firmware or NAND-level problems.

03

Choose a controlled approach

Consider imaging, hardware diagnostics or reconstruction where the device architecture permits.

04

Review results & options

Explain findings, limitations, possible recoverable data and the next quoted steps.

Mail-in recovery across Canada and internationally. Most physically failed SanDisk devices need to be evaluated directly rather than accessed through ordinary remote desktop software. See our Mail-In Data Recovery process for sending your device.
Frequently asked questions

Common questions about SanDisk recovery

Whether a particular device can be recovered depends on the failure and the remaining readable data—not the logo or capacity alone.

Can data be recovered from a SanDisk SD or microSD card that is not detected?
Possibly. Non-detection may involve connectors, an inaccessible controller or a damaged flash configuration. Some cards use monolithic constructions that require specialized assessment. The exact model and physical state matter.
Can you recover photos from a SanDisk card that asks to be formatted?
In some cases, yes. A format prompt may be caused by filesystem damage or by a deeper hardware problem. Avoid accepting the format prompt or saving new files until the device is assessed.
Can an inaccessible SanDisk Extreme Portable SSD be recovered?
It depends on whether the failure is related to the USB interface, firmware, controller, encrypted translation layer or flash memory. Some encrypted or controller-dependent failures have serious recovery limitations. A model-specific review is essential.
Is RescuePRO or free recovery software the same as professional recovery?
No. Consumer software may help when the device is stable, correctly detected and suffering only a logical file problem. It cannot generally solve physical interface, controller, NAND or certain encrypted SSD failures. Repeated scans on unstable devices can also worsen the situation.
Can a physically broken SanDisk USB flash drive be recovered?
Some connector and PCB failures can be evaluated for controlled hardware repair or acquisition. Damage involving the controller, NAND packages, monolithic construction or encryption can be more complex. The original device should be preserved intact.
Do I need to send the entire device?
Usually, for a physically failed card, USB flash drive or SSD, we need the original device to assess the electronics and flash architecture. Start by submitting its model and symptoms; we will confirm the appropriate intake route.
