What you do immediately after a data-loss event can have a significant effect on the recoverability of your files. Whether the cause is accidental deletion, formatting, physical damage or an unexpected device failure, the safest approach is to avoid making unnecessary changes to the original storage media until the cause of the problem is understood.
If the lost data is important, stop writing to or modifying the affected storage device. If a hard drive is clicking, beeping, repeatedly spinning up and down, or showing other signs of physical failure, shut it down and avoid repeatedly powering it on.
The objective after a data-loss event is to preserve the current condition of the device and avoid actions that could overwrite data or make an existing failure more difficult to recover from.
Different failures require different precautions. These are some of the most common situations we see during data recovery intake.
Stop using the affected device as soon as possible. Do not copy new files to it, reinstall an operating system, create new partitions or format the device again.
Continued use can overwrite storage locations that may still contain recoverable information.
Power the device off. Unusual mechanical sounds, repeated spin-up attempts or a drive that suddenly stops responding can indicate a physical failure.
Repeated power cycles or software scans may place additional stress on damaged components.
Do not accept formatting or repair prompts simply to make the device accessible again.
The problem may involve the filesystem, electronics, firmware or physical media, and the original device should be preserved until the failure can be properly assessed.
If the data is important and you are unsure whether the failure is logical or physical, avoiding additional use is the safest approach.
Note any error messages, unusual sounds, drops, liquid exposure, power failures, formatting or previous recovery attempts.
Submit a recovery case with the device details and symptoms. We will review the information and provide the appropriate intake instructions.
