Professional Forensic Audio Enhancement & Analysis

Aesonlabs provides forensic audio enhancement, restoration and technical analysis for recordings involved in legal matters, investigations, disputes and other situations where the interpretation or integrity of recorded audio is important.

Unlike conventional music restoration, forensic audio work is not simply about making a recording sound cleaner. The objective is to improve audibility or examine the recording while preserving the relationship to the original evidence and documenting the procedures used.

Depending on the case, the work may involve dialogue enhancement, noise reduction, spectral analysis, recording-integrity examination, technical interpretation or preparation of a written report describing the findings.

Forensic Audio Enhancement

Audio enhancement is used when relevant speech or other sounds are difficult to hear because of background noise, distance from the microphone, room acoustics, competing voices, music, mechanical noise or limitations of the recording device.

The objective is to improve the intelligibility of information that was actually captured in the recording.

Depending on the material, processing may involve controlled noise reduction, spectral repair, equalization, reduction of hum and rumble, transient repair, dialogue isolation and other targeted processing.

However, enhancement has physical limits.

If a voice was never captured with sufficient signal, has been completely masked by stronger sound or exists below the useful noise floor of the recording, software cannot reliably reconstruct words that were never recorded.

Aesonlabs does not manufacture dialogue or interpret processing artifacts as speech simply to produce a desired result.

Dialogue Enhancement

Dialogue enhancement cases are evaluated individually because recording duration alone tells us very little about the difficulty of the work.

A five-minute recording containing relatively clear speech underneath steady fan noise may require significantly less work than a ten-second passage containing distant speech, music, overlapping voices and constantly changing background noise.

We cannot provide a meaningful audio-enhancement quotation based only on the duration of the recording.

The recording must first be supplied for evaluation.

Once we understand the quality of the source material, the portion of interest and the objective of the requested work, we can determine the appropriate scope and provide a quotation.

Forensic Audio Authentication & Integrity Analysis

Audio authentication is different from enhancement.

The objective is to examine whether a recording contains technical characteristics consistent with its claimed recording history and whether there are indications of editing, interruption, recompression or other modification.

Depending on the material available, examination may involve waveform analysis, spectrogram examination, transient continuity, background-noise continuity, codec and encoding characteristics, file metadata, timing characteristics and other measurable properties of the recording.

The amount and quality of source information matters.

An original recording containing intact metadata and a known recording history can generally support a more comprehensive examination than a file that has been repeatedly exported, converted or forwarded through messaging applications.

Authentication does not automatically mean that every question can be answered conclusively. Findings are reported according to what can actually be supported by the available evidence.

Independent Technical Audio Analysis

Some cases do not fit neatly into audio enhancement or authentication.

A client, lawyer, investigator or other party may require an independent technical assessment of a particular sound, voice segment, recording characteristic or event.

These cases can involve questions such as whether more than one speaker appears to be present, whether a particular sound is consistent with speech or environmental noise, whether two audio files appear technically related, or whether a region of a recording contains measurable characteristics relevant to the matter being investigated.

The analytical method is selected according to the specific question and the quality of the source material.

Depending on the case, technical analysis may involve spectral examination, waveform analysis, harmonic analysis, fundamental-frequency estimation, formant inspection, temporal comparison and controlled listening.

Voice Comparison

Voice comparison is one of the more technically difficult areas of forensic audio analysis and should not be treated as a push-button identification process.

A person's recorded voice can vary significantly because of microphone type, recording distance, room acoustics, compression, emotional state, speaking style, background noise and other environmental factors.

Where comparison is technically appropriate, characteristics such as pitch, harmonic structure, formants, cadence, pronunciation, pauses and other speaking patterns may be examined.

The reliability of any comparison depends heavily on the quality and comparability of the submitted recordings.

Aesonlabs does not represent forensic voice comparison as producing a scientifically absolute or guaranteed "100% match."

Recordings made using substantially different devices, environments or microphone perspectives can limit the strength of any comparison that can reasonably be supported.

Audio Restoration

Not every audio project is forensic or legal in nature.

Aesonlabs can also perform restoration of recordings affected by hiss, hum, clicks, crackle, rumble, electrical interference, clipping and other unwanted noise.

This can include older recordings, interviews, archival material and other audio where the objective is primarily to improve listening quality rather than answer a forensic question.

Where preservation of the original content is important, processing remains conservative and is performed on working copies rather than altering the submitted source file.

What Audio Enhancement Cannot Do

Modern forensic audio software is powerful, but it cannot overcome the physical limitations of the recording itself.

A recording does not contain infinitely recoverable information.

If dialogue is completely masked, severely distorted, absent from the captured frequency range or never meaningfully recorded above the noise floor, there may be nothing that can be reliably enhanced.

This is particularly important with distant speech recorded by phones, surveillance devices and consumer recording equipment.

The fact that a listener believes they can hear words in noise does not by itself establish that an objectively measurable speech signal exists.

Forensic enhancement should therefore be used to reveal and clarify recorded information, not to create an interpretation that the source material cannot technically support.

No Guarantees of a Desired Result

Forensic audio work cannot guarantee that the client's desired result will be reached.

Sometimes enhancement produces a substantial improvement in intelligibility. In other cases, only limited improvement is possible. There are also recordings where technical analysis establishes that the requested information cannot be reliably extracted from the source.

A technically supportable negative finding can be just as important as a positive one.

Our role is to determine what the recording supports rather than force the material toward a predetermined conclusion.

Preservation of the Original Recording

The original submitted recording is preserved.

Enhancement, restoration and analysis are performed on working copies so that the original source material remains unchanged.

Where the work is intended for litigation, investigation or another formal proceeding, relevant analytical and processing steps can be documented so that the relationship between the submitted source and resulting material can be explained.

Depending on the scope of the engagement, documentation may include technical notes, screenshots, spectrograms, waveform views and a written report describing methodology and findings.

Audio Formats We Can Evaluate

Aesonlabs can evaluate most common digital audio formats and audio contained within common video files.

Typical formats include WAV, AIFF, FLAC, MP3, AAC/M4A, OGG and other commonly used digital audio formats.

Legacy or unusual formats can be evaluated individually.

Whenever possible, submit the original file directly from the recording device or original storage media rather than a version downloaded from social media, messaging applications or another service that may have recompressed or altered the file.

What We Need Before Providing a Quote

A meaningful forensic audio quotation normally requires the actual recording.

Please provide the source file together with a description of what you need enhanced, evaluated or determined.

Useful information includes:

  • The specific portion of the recording that is important, if known
  • The question you need answered or the material you want enhanced
  • Whether the matter is intended for court or another legal proceeding
  • Whether the submitted file is the original recording
  • Whether additional versions or related recordings exist

Simply telling us that a recording is five minutes long and requires dialogue enhancement is not enough to determine the amount of engineering work required.

A short difficult segment can require substantially more work than a much longer recording containing relatively clean speech.

We first evaluate the recording and requested objective and then determine the appropriate scope and quotation.

Legal Reports and Court-Related Work

Aesonlabs can provide technical reports for matters where forensic audio findings may be used in legal proceedings, investigations or disputes.

The analysis and report are scoped according to the submitted material and the technical questions being addressed.

Court attendance, testimony, preparation for examination, cross-examination, conferences with counsel and other litigation-related participation are not automatically included in the analytical, enhancement or report fee.

These services are quoted separately according to the requirements of the proceeding and the anticipated time commitment.

If court participation may eventually be required, please advise us as early as possible so that the scope of the engagement can be documented appropriately.

Forensic Audio Enhancement & Analysis FAQ

Sometimes dialogue can be improved significantly, but enhancement cannot recreate speech that was never adequately captured. Recoverability depends on the signal level, competing noise, recording distance, frequency content, compression and other characteristics of the source recording.

Potentially. The result depends on how strongly the speech was captured relative to the competing sound and how much their frequency and temporal characteristics overlap. Some recordings can be improved substantially while others provide very little recoverable separation.

A recording can be examined for technical characteristics associated with editing, interruption, recompression or other modification. The strength of any conclusion depends on the quality of the submitted material, availability of the original file and preservation of metadata and encoding information.

Voice comparison may be possible in appropriate cases, but it is not an absolute identification process. Recording quality, microphone characteristics, environment, speaking style and comparability of the reference recordings all affect what conclusions can reasonably be supported.

The original file is strongly preferred, particularly for authentication or legal analysis. Converted, exported or messaging-app copies may have altered encoding characteristics and may no longer contain the original metadata.

No. Duration alone does not determine the amount of work required. A short section containing distant or heavily masked speech may require substantially more analysis than a much longer recording containing relatively clear dialogue. The file must first be evaluated.

The submitted original is preserved. Enhancement and restoration are performed on working copies, allowing the processed result to remain distinguishable from the original source material.
